Hereditary Peers' By-election The Clerk of the Parliaments informed the House that Lord Sandhurst, the Earl of Leicester and Lord Altrincham had been elected under Standing Order 9 (Hereditary peers: by-elections) to fill the vacancies created by the retirement of the Earl of Selborne, the retirement of Lord Denham and the non-attendance of Lord Selsdon among the Conservative peers excepted from section 1 of the House of Lords Act 1999.
